GMD-R Ltd was founded to address a practical challenge in arthroscopic surgery: the need for a single-use instrument that can perform soft-tissue resection and coagulation using the same device, within the confined space of a joint.
The GMD project was initiated in Kyiv in 2022 by Bogdan Gryshchuk, an orthopaedic surgeon with more than 15 years of clinical experience. Drawing on his experience in arthroscopic surgery, he developed a loop-electrode resector designed to combine tissue resection and coagulation in a single instrument, connected to RF generators used in the operating theatre.
The device has been used in more than 200 clinical procedures in Ukraine, with no serious adverse events reported in those procedures. The Ukrainian manufacturing operation is certified to ISO 13485, and the technology is protected by patents in the UK, US and Ukraine.
In 2024, GMD-R established a UK company to develop the product for the UK market and progress its regulatory, clinical and commercial pathway towards NHS adoption. The company is now based at Nexus, University of Leeds, and is working with UK organisations across regulatory, manufacturing, clinical and commercialisation activities.
Today, GMD-R has an established network of UK specialist partners and support organisations. Together, these relationships support the transition from clinically used technology in Ukraine towards a regulated product for the UK market.
